The problem is that if you take liberalism to its logical end without any rule of higher law morality, you get COMMUNISM, an alleged utopia of everyone being equal or in the other direction FASCISM, an alleged utopia of one man rule because everyone cannot be trusted. The problem is in BOTH end states, the people have to be FORCED at gunpoint to either share everything with everyone with a small minority "supervising" or to give up everything to a single man dictator.

Since both extremes are about FORCE and end up in both cases with TYRANNY, the political spectrum is really NOT linear but CIRCULAR since in the end whether you are going left or right (people are good or people are bad) BOTH DIRECTIONS LEAD TO THE SAME ROTTEN CONCLUSION: TYRANNY! Freedom vs. Control is THE central issue

Liberal vs. Conservative Attitudes/Flavoring are just on left or right of the Freedom vs. Control Circle. Staying at the top of the circle is the hardest; man's fallen nature pulls down institutions towards control and slavery. Right now, America has slipped down to NATIONALISM due to the un-elected influence of the Neocons on/in the Bush administration exploiting post 9/11 attack fears of the populace. The Bush administration has no respect for the rule of law and has violated the American Constitution for over 5 years without any public accountability and censure. Large corporations have "stacked the deck" against small companies as the post-WW2 militarization of the American economy has gone unchecked and spiralled into corruption and incompetence. Small federal elites try to handle the 300 million people and 3, 000 mile long nation's problems and the general public are told to shut up and stay out, when an "America's Most Wanted" TV show of known terrorists would result in them being round up quickly as in WW2 when German spies/saboteurs tried to operate here on U.S. soil. Clearly we are headed to FASCISM and loss of civil liberties in the name of "American Security".

Although we often misuse the word Fascism to mean anything authoritarian, or of which we disapprove, it is, in fact, a type of Socialism. Nazism (the National SOCIALIST German WORKERS Party) was avowedly Socialistic. All of the great Fascists in history, like the Communists, were Socialists first. Communism and Fascism are both brutal, ruthless, and impossibly destructive totalitarian utopian fantasies that are prone to the murder of tens of millions and the enslavement of hundreds of millions. Both are based on fear, envy, and hatred of an "Other", with Communism focusing these emotions against imagined "class enemies" while Fascism focuses these on imagined "national enemies". What then is the distinction? It is much more subtle than is usually imagined. Communists avow the elimination of private property, with ownership of all property, wealth, and power devolving directly to the state (and its agents); while Fascism, in contrast, upholds a nominal right to private property, but only under the control of the state (and its agents). In both cases, all wealth and power, and in effect property itself, devolve directly or indirectly to the state; but under Fascism, the state fosters the illusion of private property (is it really private, after all, if ownership confers no real control). Another distinction mistakenly posited below regards the nature of the ruling structure (a despotism versus an oligarchy). There is no inherent difference between the two on this score. They both tend to involve both, with despotism generally emerging as dominant in both.

Finally, the opening assertion that the rejection of the role of divine authority in politics and law tends to lead to the excesses of both Communism and Fascism is correct; not because there necessarily is a God who must be thus honored, but because that belief, whether true or not, holds all political doctrines to an ethical and moral standard outside and above themselves. It thereby exerts a (highly imperfect, but nonetheless real) controlling force that curbs the worst excesses to which the law and politics are susceptible. In the absence of the prevalence of this view, political doctrine is free to hold itself as the highest standard of morality and ethics, in effect, becoming a religion in its own right (even if Godless); and the true power of both Communism and Fascism lay in the fact that they were religions, religions that defined morality and ethics, and with no constraints on the use of deadly force against infidels or apostates. Some argue that Islam is like that today, differing from Communism and Fascism only in its recognition of God, but a God that resides within its religious/political framework, not above it. I do not know enough about Islam to assert an opinion on this; although this does seem to be true for some Muslims (hence the popularity of the term "Islamo-Fascism")."

Health

The Brave American refuses to be a part of the 70% of all adult Americans using legal or illegal drugs that fuels the border incursions taking place all over our country. He chooses to live life sober and find and make his happiness that is real, not drug induced. He drug tests his kids and insists they be the same. If he drinks alcohol or smokes its in moderation short of becoming drunk or a chain smoker. He does not gamble at casinos to fund organized crime because he is content with the money he has and if he wants more, knows he must work for it. The Brave American gets in the best physical shape that he can before reaching 18 at least one time to set his adult fat cell count at the optimum amount so his adult years are lived with the best body possible. The Brave American realizes aging is caused by the rays of the sun, stays covered, uses sunscreen. The Brave American chooses to get all the sleep his body requires even if it means lowering his life expenses to meet his job income's work hours to get the time his body needs to restore itself. The Brave American drinks milk and exercises at least one hour a day, preferably walking, biking (ideal would be a pedal generator that charges 12v deep cycle batteries) and weight lifting.

The Brave American insists that the government orchestrate a national health care system emphasizing PREVENTATIVE medicine. Until this happens he provides it to himself and his employees in his small business.

Education

The Brave American realizes learning and thinking is FUN because our universe is full of wonders even in its fallen state, and uses the internet to make web pages to reflect his learning. He realizes the current Dewey-based public educational system is designed to make learning a pain so as to create status quo compliant "sheeple". Instead of teaching social conformity, the Brave American home schools his children but has them engage in afterschool sports/clubs to maintain social interaction. The Brave American insists on a total reform of the American public school system to one where creation is taught, thinking encouraged by all school work done using HTML web coding and desktop computer ease of correction, A, B, C, D, F grading that flaunts zero-sum thinking replaced with 100% mastery learning based on group cooperation and success as the goal. The school system should teach how to operate and repair cars, homes and small businesses. The Brave American teaches his children these things hands-on regardless.

National Service

The Brave American realizes he owes at least 2 years of his life to America and gives this service through military, police, medical, church or forestry work. This will show our young people there is more to life than the narrow prejudices of their 50 mile radius or less home area circle of peers and relatives. 2 years of national service will not only make them take responsibility for themselves and their actions, it will provide a lump sum of money to go to college and buy a car with. National service will also show the older generation that the younger generation has actually put back into the nation and developed some loyalty. Full health care benefits are the next company goal--in the final analysis all we have is each other. If China is beating our price, we tighten our company belts and reduce leader's salaries and/or build a better mousetrap. We never outsource to have things built by foreign country sweat shops. Transportation

The Brave American pedal bikes to work to get his physical conditioning and not pollute the planet with fossil fuel emissions. If the distances are too great he restricts his commutes to just 5 days a week. The current gasoline-powered car is unsafe and should be replaced by diesel engines that burn lower volatility fuel and can by their compression type of operation use fuels like cooking grease and bio-diesel to eliminate our need for fossil fuels from hostile, foreign countries that result in our corrupt politicians sending our military Soldiers into unjust wars to take.

Brave Americans want a national curfew on all fossil fuel car use on every Monday to drastically reduce CO2 emissions NOW before global warming turns America's shores into a giant Katrina-style disaster zone.

When the Brave American gets a sizable savings he does not go on vacation, he buys solar, wind and pedal generators to power a bank of 12v deep cycle batteries to create a Zero Energy home. When he washes clothes in a machine he does not afterwards use a dryer, he hangs them on a hanger and drip dries them which also eliminates any wrinkles and the electrical use of an iron.

Conservation

Americans must consciously chose to buy durable, reusable goods. If the current corrupt corporations will not make durable goods like cars that do not break down by planned obsolescence design weakness then a small family owned company needs to step up to the plate and offer a safe, durable hybrid-electric economy car that will last. Packaging of materials must be recyclable to reduce the waste and trash generated by Americans. For example, a jar of mayonnaise should come with a handle so after its emptied it becomes a drink cup. Instead of using cameras which use film and chemical developing, use digital cameras that take photos electronically. There does not have to be "winners and losers"; those making inefficient and unsafe means need to CHANGE and provide the better items.

Environment

50% of the air pollution Americans create that's warming the entire planet with disastrous effects is caused by our cars/trucks, 25% our homes and 25% our factories. We can cut out 1/7th of the 50% from cars/trucks by having a fossil fuel vehicle curfew every Monday. 25% of the pollution caused by our homes can be solved by everyone going to zero energy self-sufficiency means. Inner-city and inter-city trains powered by wind and solar electricity can further reduce the car/truck pollution problem far better than waiting for the perfectly clean car to be developed and replace the millions of current dirty gasoline cars in use.  

Romance

The Brave American dreams big ideas and lives them; he does not sit and wait to die just because the world we live in cannot be perfected. Jesus (God when he visited us here himself) was a carpenter. Technology is what God wants us to do not sing songs and wait to die. The 300 mph train system would enable all Americans to inexpensively travel throughout the country on foot with just a backpack as can now be done in Europe to gain an appreciation for culture and a sense of who we are. Another option would be to park your economy car on the 300 mph train and then at your destination drive it short distances. Some will criticize the Brave American social movement for slowing down consumerism but this conscious choice to reduce pollution and conserve resources into a better use of our energies like 300 mph trains will INCREASE economic activity except it will be in an earth and human character friendly way.

Brave American efficiency and innovation would free up the resources and be wise to put a genius like Burt Rutan in charge of our space program to clean up all the orbital debris from disposable booster rockets circling overhead as well as get a safer and economical means to go into space and back.  

Government Reform

The Brave American realizes that our founding fathers wanted the people to be involved in ALL aspects of national life by having local State legislatures temporarily elect their 2 Senators sent to Washington D.C. In this way, national issues can be debated at the state capital building with the direct participation of the people. The current direct election of Senators every 6 years "floats" them to D.C. where they have been captured and corrupted by special interest groups and the amendment of 1913 setting this in place must be reversed.  

The following picture is from a protest rally in London, England and shows the weak egos of some Islamics who need to be surrounded by others in a sub-national group. These folks seem more skilled at staging protest rallies than creating jobs and constructive activities for themselves. If they thought they were right with God, they'd shut the fuck up and be content that they are going to heaven and get 29 virgins etc. The inconsistent script of their religion doesn't only teach personal quiet example, but that everyone in Islam must unite under a one-world government dictator and at threat of death become Muslim or be an underling. What bothers their weak egos is that most of the world doesn't buy into their death cult BS and seem pretty happy, too. Its not jealousy its ENVY. They see what we have and want to destroy us for it.

Notice all the self-sufficient, Bruce Wayne individuals coming together! (of course, they don't need to come together, the group doesn't exert any peer pressure to make them do anything like we know happens with suicide bombers etc.).

So are these folks the 1% minority of trouble-makers that need to be kill/captured?

Well? Are they are?

OK, let's say they are not the 1% but the mythical 99% Islamics some say just want to live in peace in the west but perhaps are just pissed off?

We believe in free speech. However, the signs above are not free speech they are CRIMINAL, VERBAL ASSAULT advocating people to commit murder. If you go into a crowded theater and yell "FIRE!" when there is none, an act that could cause people to die in a panic---its a criminal act that can get you punished.

Likewise, free speech advocating MURDER over mere insults over religion is exactly the kind of crying "FIRE!" in a public gathering that should not be tolerated. ALL of those people in that gathering---A SUB-NATIONAL GROUP....should be arrested, tried and if found guilty deported from England as disqualified to be citizens in that country or any western country. Violent religious intolerance cannot be tolerated. If they said on their signs, "Hating Islam Makes you Scum" that would be intolerance but not necessarily violent intolerance and would be allowable. But saying to "BEHEAD" or that "9/11" attacks are justified etc. are grounds to have you kicked out of the nation-state.

Absolute freedom of speech is ANARCHY...that's being able to yell "FIRE!" in a public gathering which is clearly wrong. Some Libertarians might say letting people blow off anger is a good thing and we should tolerate even violence talk. If Japan attacked us and FDR did nothing I'm sure protesters would have marched. I'm sure some of their signs had said "Invade Japan!". However, that's OK because its saying we should take REASONED violent action in self-defense from an actual attack. From the tower of Babel, God instituted nation-states to keep a handle on the passions of men from creating a one-world government where everyone is mixed in together at the expense of truth. VIVA LA DIFFERENCE! And the power of differance is that those that cannot mix SHOULD LIVE SEPARATE AND APART from each other. When these folks are living together CONFLICT is sure to follow. "Insulting" Islam is not grounds for war and since the teachings of Islam say it is, disqualifies this religion as allowable in western societies. Common sense tells you that if you have no loyalty to the nation-state you live in, GET OUT and live somewhere where you can be a wonderful Muslim all you want. This is the best way to keep your alternative point of view on the world "radar screen".

In a recent poll in Great Britain 50% of the Muslims did not think of themselves as British citizens but "Muslims living in Britian". 25% thought they were British citizens but their guidance came from the Mosque not #10 Downing Street or Parliament.

Both of these categories of belief are intolerable, don't you think they should be expelled from England? If they are to live in the nation-state they have to live by the rules of society, if they refuse they should be expelled from society.

VIOLENT INTOLERANCE of a religious view is within a nation-state an act of SUB-NATIONAL WAR (would it make you feel better Scott, if we call it INDIVIDUAL-SUB-NATIONAL WAR?), INSURRECTION, UNJUSTIFIED REBELLION. You pick the negative term.

If it means that its time for the American experiment to face the fact that all beliefs CANNOT mix peaceably in defacto anarchy, then its time to grow up and admit individual freedom is not a panacea and doesn't work with Islam.

What Happened To My Country?

I grew up an American, and proud of it. I was taught in school about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and Bill of Rights. My brother was a Merchant Marine Officer during the war and had three ships sunk beneath him. We beat the Nazis, the Fascists and the Japanese and made the world safe for democracy. After the war came Nuremberg and the assurance that things like the holocaust could never happen again. The Marshal Plan helped to rebuild the shattered portions of the world. America, Democracy, compassion and help. It was good to be an American. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were sad, but necessary to end the war and save lives, we were told.

We read George Orwell's 1984, which could happen in Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union, but we could never have thought police and endless war here in the United States. Then came the Cold War, McCarthy, Korea, and later on Vietnam. My service time crossed those wars, but I thanked my stars I didn't have to fight in them. I was at Bikini for the Hydrogen Bomb tests in 1956, which taught me the unthinkable horror of nuclear war.

Vietnam taught us the danger and folly of going to war on a false pretext. Tonkin Gulf was to be a lesson to us all, as was the intended impeachment of Nixon for violating the law and the Constitution. We wouldn't let that happen again; no president was ever going to spy on his own people again, or persecute people who didn't agree with him or his policies.

Yes, the United States was a nation of great wealth. A nation that took care to see to the freedom and well being of its citizens, and welcomed the downtrodden foreigner to the new land. It was a nation that pioneered the exploration of space and gloried in the advance of science. I was proud to be an American!

My God! What has happened to my nation? My nation that no longer pays more than lip service to its Constitution and Bill of Rights, which have been a beacon to the world for over two centuries. My nation that unilaterally discards treaties that were the hope of a world of peace, guided by law and diplomacy. My nation that will wage a war of aggression against a far off nation that was no threat to it, but that has lots of oil. My nation that gives all of its wealth to the rich and is satisfied to leave its citizens to starve, homeless, unemployed and sickly.

What happened to that Constitution that so wisely divided the government into three separate units, to provide a system of checks and balances against any one branch usurping power? How did we wind up with a President that refers to the Constitution that he swore to protect and defend as "just a goddamned piece of paper," and a Congress that seems willing to rubber stamp any giveaway the President demands? How did we find ourselves with a Supreme Court that will set aside the Constitution in favor of unlimited presidential power for the duration?

Now I live in an America I don't dare leave for fear of being spat upon, shot, bombed or kidnaped. I am looked upon as a citizen of a rogue nation that has no concept or respect for any law except bullying and strength. I need a passport even to visit Canada, which was to be our sister nation with open borders forever. I must expect to be required to show my "papers" at any time, to any official. I must accept that the government can break into my house and rifle my belongings and papers any time it wishes on the thinnest of excuses and it is not even required to let me know it has violated my home and my privacy. I must accept the fact that the government can listen in to my private conversations, my phone, my e-mail, can probably read my snail mail if they wish and can put a gag order on anyone who has information on me so I may not even be made aware that I am being spied upon. George Orwell's absolute dictatorship has crept in to my home and my life and thrown out my beloved Constitution and Bill of Rights. The difference between the United States, Soviet Russia, Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy is steadily and inexorably diminishing and the people are letting it happen while they remain paralyzed with fear. Fear incited by the gang that runs the White House and their cronies in the propaganda ministry that used to be our last bulwark against tyranny; our once free press.

So now my pride in America is for our past; my sadness for our present; my fear for our future. I am no longer proud to be an American, but I have no place to go.

Why The Direct Election Of Senators May Have Been A Serious Mistake, And One That Helps Explain The Supreme Court's States' Rights Views

Federalism - the allocation and balancing of power between state and federal government - has emerged as a central concern of the Supreme Court under Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Slowly, but steadily, the Rehnquist Court has been cutting back federal powers, and protecting state's rights. Many have wondered what the Court is doing. Why are the Court's five conservatives - the Chief Justice himself, along with Associate Justices Sandra Day O'Connor, Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, and Clarence Thomas - creating this new jurisprudence of federalism? The Amendment calls for direct election of U.S. Senators. It's a change that has in fact proved anything but democratic. And it is a change whose aftermath may haunt the Twenty-first Century.

Concerns About Federalism, Especially Post-September 11

Divisions of power are rooted in our Constitution. Experience had taught the Framers the dangers of concentrations of ruling authority, resulting in their ingenious template of checks and balances, with divisions and distributions of power. Ultimate power in a democracy resides with the people. We are not a pure democracy, however, but rather a confederated republic (one that features, as well, county and local political subdivisions). Thus, while there is national sovereignty, there is also state sovereignty. Power has been so divided and spread for one reason: to provide for and protect the highest sovereignty - that of each individual citizen. Only fools reject the wisdom of this founding principle of defusing power. Yet from the outset there has been debate regarding the appropriate allocation and balancing of these powers. The debate has focussed on not only whether a particular matter should be dealt with at the state versus the national level, but also on how these allocations are adjusted from time to time.

Of late, for example, along with laments for those who tragically lost their lives during the September 11th terrorist attack, there has been widespread concern with new realignments of federal/state powers that have followed in the name of homeland security.

Column continues below ? Most significantly, as I discussed in a previous column, Washington is assuming powers that have only previously existed during a Congressionally declared war.

Creating the United States Senate: The Framers' Bicameralism

Unsurprisingly, the Revolutionaries were not very impressed with most aspects of the British model of government. They rejected parliamentary government, with its king or queen and three estates of the realm (lords spiritual, lords temporal, and the commons).

But one feature of the British system, the Framers did borrow. That was bicameralism - a word coined by Brit Jeremy Bentham to describe the division of the legislature into two chambers (or, in Latin, camera). The British Parliament had its House of Lords as the upper chamber and the House of Commons as the lower chamber. Citizens selected members of the House of Commons. The members of the House of Lords, in contrast, were those who had been titled by a king or queen (lords temporal) and the archbishops and bishops of the Church of England (lords spiritual).

Loosely basing our bicameral legislature on this model (minus the lords, both temporal and spiritual), the Framers created the House of Representatives as the lower chamber, whose members would be selected directly by the people. And with almost unanimous agreement, they determined that members of the upper chamber, the Senate, would be selected by not directly, but by the legislatures of the states. Each state would have two Senators, while Representatives would be apportioned based on population. James Madison was not only involved in structuring the system, but was also a keeper of its contemporaneous record. He explained in Federalist No. 10 the reason for bicameralism: "Before taking effect, legislation would have to be ratified by two independent power sources: the people's representatives in the House and the state legislatures' agents in the Senate."

The need for two powers to concur would, in turn, thwart the influence of special interests, and by satisfying two very different constituencies, would assure the enactment was for the greatest public good. Madison summed up the concept nicely in Federalist No 51:

In republican government, the legislative authority, necessarily predominate. The remedy for this inconveniency is, to divide the legislature into different branches; and to render them by different modes of election, and different principles of action, as little connected with each other, as the nature of their common functions and their common dependencies on the society, will admit.

The system as designed by the Framers was in place for a century and a quarter, from 1789 until 1913, when the Seventeenth Amendment was adopted. As originally designed, the Framers' system both protected federalism and ensured that relatively few benefits would be provided to special interests.

The Cloudy Reasons Behind The Seventeenth Amendment

Before the Seventeenth Amendment the federal government remained stable and small. Following the Amendment's adoption it has grown dramatically.

The conventional wisdom is that it was FDR's New Deal that radically increased the size and power of federal government. But scholars make a convincing case that this conventional wisdom is wrong, and that instead, it was the Seventeenth Amendment (along with the Sixteenth Amendment, which created federal income tax and was also adopted in 1913) that was the driving force behind federal expansion. The Amendment took a long time to come. It was not until 1820 that a resolution was introduced in the House of Representatives to amend the Constitution to provide for direct elections of Senators. And not until after the Civil War, in 1870, did calls for altering the system begin in earnest. But forty-three years passed before the change was actually made.

This lengthy passage of time clouds the causes that provoked the Amendment to be proposed and, finally, enacted. Nonetheless, scholars do have a number of theories to explain these developments. George Mason University law professor Todd Zywicki has assembled an excellent analysis of the recent scholarship on the history of the Seventeenth Amendment, while also filling in its gaps. Zywicki finds, however, that received explanations are incomplete.

Two Main Seventeenth Amendment Theories Don't Hold Water On Examination

There have been two principal explanations for changing the Constitution to provide for direct election of Senators. Some see the Amendment as part of the Progressive Movement, which swept the nation in the late 1800s and early 1900s, giving us direct elections, recall, and referendums.

Others, however, believe the Amendment resulted from the problems the prior Constitutional system was creating in state legislatures, who under that system were charged with electing Senators. These problems ranged from charges of bribery to unbreakable deadlocks.

Deadlocks happened from time to time when, because of party imbalance, a legislature was unable to muster a majority (as necessary under the 1866 law that controlled) in favor any person. The result was to leave the Senate seat empty and leave the state represented by only a single Senator, not the Constitutionally-mandated two.

What about the "corruption and deadlock" explanation? Zywicki's analysis shows that, in fact, the corruption was nominal, and infrequent. In addition, he points out that the deadlock problem could have been easily solved by legislation that would have required only a plurality to elect a Senator - a far easier remedy than the burdensome process of amending the Constitution that led to the Seventeenth Amendment. Fortuntely, Professor Zywicki offers an explanation for the Amendment's enactment that makes much more sense. He contends that the true backers of the Seventeenth Amendment were special interests, which had had great difficultly influencing the system when state legislatures controlled the Senate. (Recall that it had been set up by the Framers precisely to thwart them.) They hoped direct elections would increase their control, since they would let them appeal directly to the electorate, as well as provide their essential political fuel - money.

This explanation troubles many. However, as Zywicki observes, "[a]thought some might find this reality 'distasteful,' that does not make it any less accurate."

Should The Seventeenth Amendment Be Repealed?

Those unhappy with the Supreme Court's recent activism regarding federalism should considering joining those who believe the Seventeenth Amendment should be repealed. Rather than railing at life-tenured Justices who are inevitably going to chart their own courses, critics should focus instead on something they can affect, however difficult a repeal might be.

Repeal of the amendment would restore both federalism and bicameralism. It would also have a dramatic and positive effect on campaign spending. Senate races are currently among the most expensive. But if state legislatures were the focus of campaigns, more candidates might get more access with less money - decidedly a good thing.

Returning selection of Senators to state legislatures might be a cause that could attract both modern progressive and conservatives. For conservatives, obviously, it would be a return to the system envisioned by the Framers. For progressives - who now must appreciate that direct elections have only enhanced the ability of special interests to influence the process - returning to the diffusion of power inherent in federalism and bicameralism may seem an attractive alternative, or complement, to campaign finance reform. Profession Zywicki likes this idea as well, but is probably right in finding repeal unlikely. He comments - and I believe he's got it right -- "Absent a change of heart in the American populace and a better understanding of the beneficial role played by limitations on direct democracy, it is difficult to imagine a movement to repeal the Seventeenth Amendment."

A Liberal's Pledge to Disheartened Conservatives ...by Michael Moore

To My Conservative Brothers and Sisters,

I know you are dismayed and disheartened at the results of last week's election. You're worried that the country is heading toward a very bad place you don't want it to go. Your 12-year Republican Revolution has ended with so much yet to do, so many promises left unfulfilled. You are in a funk, and I understand.

Well, cheer up, my friends! Do not despair. I have good news for you. I, and the millions of others who are now in charge with our Democratic Congress, have a pledge we would like to make to you, a list of promises that we offer you because we value you as our fellow Americans. You deserve to know what we plan to do with our newfound power -- and, to be specific, what we will do to you and for you.

Thus, here is our Liberal's Pledge to Disheartened Conservatives:

Dear Conservatives and Republicans,

I, and my fellow signatories, hereby make these promises to you:

1. We will always respect you for your conservative beliefs. We will never, ever, call you "unpatriotic" simply because you disagree with us. In fact, we encourage you to dissent and disagree with us.

2. We will let you marry whomever you want, even when some of us consider your behavior to be "different" or "immoral." Who you marry is none of our business. Love and be in love -- it's a wonderful gift.

3. We will not spend your grandchildren's money on our personal whims or to enrich our friends. It's your checkbook, too, and we will balance it for you.

4. When we soon bring our sons and daughters home from Iraq, we will bring your sons and daughters home, too. They deserve to live. We promise never to send your kids off to war based on either a mistake or a lie.

5. When we make America the last Western democracy to have universal health coverage, and all Americans are able to get help when they fall ill, we promise that you, too, will be able to see a doctor, regardless of your ability to pay. And when stem cell research delivers treatments and cures for diseases that affect you and your loved ones, we'll make sure those advances are available to you and your family, too.

6. Even though you have opposed environmental regulation, when we clean up our air and water, we, the Democratic majority, will let you, too, breathe the cleaner air and drink the purer water.

7. Should a mass murderer ever kill 3,000 people on our soil, we will devote every single resource to tracking him down and bringing him to justice. Immediately. We will protect you.

8. We will never stick our nose in your bedroom or your womb. What you do there as consenting adults is your business. We will continue to count your age from the moment you were born, not the moment you were conceived.

9. We will not take away your hunting guns. If you need an automatic weapon or a handgun to kill a bird or a deer, then you really aren't much of a hunter and you should, perhaps, pick up another sport. We will make our streets and schools as free as we can from these weapons and we will protect your children just as we would protect ours.

10. When we raise the minimum wage, we will pay you -- and your employees -- that new wage, too. When women are finally paid what men make, we will pay conservative women that wage, too.

11. We will respect your religious beliefs, even when you don't put those beliefs into practice. In fact, we will actively seek to promote your most radical religious beliefs ("Blessed are the poor," "Blessed are the peacemakers," "Love your enemies," "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God," and "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."). We will let people in other countries know that God doesn't just bless America, he blesses everyone. We will discourage religious intolerance and fanaticism -- starting with the fanaticism here at home, thus setting a good example for the rest of the world.

12. We will not tolerate politicians who are corrupt and who are bought and paid for by the rich. We will go after any elected leader who puts him or herself ahead of the people. And we promise you we will go after the corrupt politicians on our side FIRST. If we fail to do this, we need you to call us on it. Simply because we are in power does not give us the right to turn our heads the other way when our party goes astray. Please perform this important duty as the loyal opposition.

I promise all of the above to you because this is your country, too. You are every bit as American as we are. We are all in this together. We sink or swim as one. Thank you for your years of service to this country and for giving us the opportunity to see if we can make things a bit better for our 300 million fellow Americans -- and for the rest of the world.
